Missy Elliott will be starting off 2018 with a bang as she receives Essence’s Black Women in Music honor. The Essence honor recognizes the accomplishments of established artists during Grammy week. 

Essence Editor-in-Chief, Vanessa De Luca stated that “the artistry of Missy Elliott cuts across generations underscored by her vast creative accomplishments and contributions to the culture. So prolific is her work, she is an inspiration to women all over the world. Missy’s energetic presence is truly magnetic and we can’t wait to celebrate her as one of the artistic masterminds of our time.”

Past honorees who were presented with this honor include Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Kelly Rowland, Andra Day, Jill Scott, Emeli Sandé and Sylvia Rhone.

Missy Elliott will receive the honor on Jan. 25 at the Highline Ballroom in New York City.
