BET has finally announced the date for the highly anticipated ‘The New Edition Story’.
The biopic follows the lives of 70’s R&B greats Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie Devoe, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill who made up the group New Edition (NE) .
Through the film, we get a glimpse of the life of these boys as they go from their hometown in Boston to the dame and fortune in Hollywood. They also showcase the rise of the group to the numerous breakups and then the reunions that have all happened within the past 30 years.
The young group of actors that portray the group consist of Bryshere Y. Gray as Michael Bivins, Luke James as Johnny Gill, Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, Elijah Kelley as Rickey Bell, Keith Powers as Ronnie DeVoe and Woody McClain as Bobby Brown.
But what is a biopic without input from the actual members? All of the New Edition members have signed on to help through the making of the film as producers as well as their long manager and original choreographer Brook Payne who signed on as co-producer.
According to NE member Ronnie DeVoe he was initially nervous at the fact that someone would be playing him and his life on screen. He continued saying, “a lot of times in life when a person’s story is told they are no longer here to see it. So like my grandmother would say “let me smell my roses while I’m here,” so I’m smelling my roses and it feels great.”
The film is set to be a 3-night six-hour premiere starting on January 24 and ending on the 26th.
