DJ Virman's life is a bit different then his superstar Power Mixer brother E-man. Although they both grew up in the same house, Virman was the mid dle kid of the family and what you could call "the rebel". Virman recalls, "I didn't want to be like my big brother. I would come home late, got my ears pierced, and would get into more trouble then him. Funny because I eventually ended up just like him, a DJ, and I love it." That could be considered a blessing in disguise.
Growing up on in the streets of Long Beach, Virman would get sweated everyday because some people thought he was from another gang, or because of what he was wearing. A typical day for Virman would include hangin' out on the block playing football, kickin' it at the pool at the park or "housing" with some of his homies but that would soon change. On the turntables was where he began to spend most of his time. "I give my brother all the credit for showing me the turntables"
Virman loves to mix because he is able to show his talents, but there are some hidden talents that most people don't know about. "When I'm in the mix room, I love to dance" Virman says. "I always dance when I mix, because I love the music so much. There are times that I forget that the record is about to end I miss my cue to mix in, I'm into the music that much". But it's instrumental break beats like "Planet Rock" that he digs the most, "I can scratch to them all day" says Virman.
One of Virman's most embarrassing moments happened when he was doing a dance routine with his cousin. "He flipped me and the birthday girl was right behind me, I fell right on top of her. Her legs hit my shoulders, it was very funny"
For those who are interested in getting into mixing, "Keep practicing" Virman suggests, "Send in all your mixtapes to every radio station you can find". Knowing your mix cues is what Virman says is the secret to becoming a good mixer. "Know where the breaks are and whatever you do, don't use any "mixit" records on every mix.
Virman is currently going to school for Telecommunications Management. He knows how to hook up LANs and WANs and would someday love to build his own network, maybe, even his own radio station. |
