Hi Power Fan!

If you are here I know that Power 106 is a part of your life. Thank you! Here are the details on the Performance Tax you may have heard about on Power 106. 80 years ago, the Federal Government made a deal with the business community allowing businesses to use the public airwaves in return for providing quality entertainment, emergency information, national defense info, weather, local news, community support for local charities, and community access during Knowledge is Power. All of this was to be provided free of charge to listeners. Because of this public/ private partnership free over-air-radio grew to where 92% of all Americans use radio each week. To pay the bills radio sells advertising, so radio costs you nothing & radio receives absolutely NO government support.

Radio plays the music, the artist receives free radio exposure. As a result the artists get famous & sell lots of CDs & downloads. It's a balanced relationship that works.

Record companies know that it works. They employ many representatives who call on radio program directors to play their music. When the CD's sell, the record companies send us gold & platinum CD's with thank you messages. You've probably seen them in the halls of Power 106 if you’ve ever stopped by to pick up a prize.

The record industry is now in trouble. They want a bailout. So they have chosen to go after the one partner who has helped them sell CD's for years; RADIO. They have gone to Congress and asked them to pass a new tax that would allow the record companies to tax Power 106, and all radio stations for playing the music for free.

If this tax passes it will take money out of Los Angeles and send it to the mostly foreign record companies based in France, England & Japan. It's not right and it will cost Los Angeles radio jobs and severely limit the amount of community service that we can provide.
